Have you ever opened a hot bag of popcorn and took a bite only to realize it hasn’t been salted? It makes you want to through the entire bag away, it is so disappointing!
In the same token, Jesus said, “You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless.” (Matthew 5:13)
What does salt actually do?
Without going into a big science lesson, salt is actually one of our five taste buds – salt, bitter, sweet, sour, and umami (MSG). Salt also helps suppress bitterness taste. You can also use salt to preserve food.
Why did Jesus call us to be the salt of the earth?
Well, I’m glad you asked! I think part of why we are here is to preserve people. Let’s get one thing straight here – I’m not talking about preserving the natural body. Instead, I’m talking about people’s souls. But how?
By spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ!
We are here to witness to people and make disciples. We are not here to have a house with a white picket fence and 2.1 kids! This is the “America Dream” and so many Christians has bought into this lie! We are here to bring people to Christ! Now, it is perfectly okay to earn a good living – and frankly some people are called to do this. Why? To fund people on the mission field – to spread the gospel!’
